Q. What is the Oregon Training Network?
A. Initially launched as a partnership with Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski and the Software Association of Oregon to better train the state’s technology workforce, OTN has evolved into an independent training network that now caters to a broader group of professionals in a myriad of industries, at various points in career development, working for businesses and organizations of all sizes.
Q. What type of training does OTN offer?
A. We offer courses in a number of topic areas, including software, IT/Clean Tech, Internet marketing/social media, communications/teams, business development/ sales and business strategies/leadership. OTN also routinely enhances and refines our course offerings based on student feedback, industry needs and overarching trends.
Q. Who attends your training sessions?
A. Our continuing education offerings are designed for the professional. They could be looking to enhance their knowledge for their current post, or exploring their next career possibility. They can be entrepreneurs, consultants, contractors, and/or those employed by large, Fortune 500 companies, or small start ups.
Q. How does OTN make training so affordable?
A. Through strategic partnerships, various grants or workforce subsidy programs and seasoned expertise for finding the best venues, preparing the most concise curriculum and allying ourselves with the right people, whether they be independent caterers or professionals eager to teach in the local market.
Q. Why are government employees not allowed to register at federally subsidized rates?
A. Governor Kulongoski set aside a small pool of the Federal workforce training funds (WIA) to support incumbent worker training as a means to increase the competitiveness of Oregon companies and to increase the skills of the workforce. As these are Federal funds there are clearly outlined rules and guidelines about how it is allowed to be spent. They can only be used to support training for non-profit or private sector companies and is not intended to support government employees. This is a Federal regulation which would literally take an act of Congress to change. Therefore there is nothing at the local or state level that can be done to change this regulation, as frustrating as that may be for government employed individuals and those of us in Oregon who wish we could help change the rules.
Q. What is your refund policy?
A. We know that circumstances do exist that are beyond control. Depending on the class size, OTN respectfully asks people to provide 5 business days cancellation notice to receive a 50 percent refund or 10 business days notice to receive a full refund. Substitutions may also be made at any time.
Q. Do you offer group discounts?
A. Depending on class size and the nature of the class, we do offer various discounts, including if an organization or organizer signs up four people, the fifth person is free. If there are enough people interested in a class for it to be held privately within a company, there also are discounts for that.
Q. Who are the OTN instructors, and how do you find them?
A. OTN works with instructors or training vendors who have lengthy careers and offer real world experience. They all are viewed as thought leaders in their areas of expertise and are willing and eager to participate in providing ongoing learning opportunities for others. Sometimes they have sought out OTN, asking to teach a particular class, and other times OTN has approached them with a training event in mind.

Q. What do I need to bring to class?
A. All you need to bring is yourself. You are welcome to bring something for note taking, but we typically ask that electronic devices only be used when necessary, unless it’s required for the specific class. You are also encouraged to bring business cards for networking with fellow course attendees.
Q. What can I do to prepare for a class?
A. It depends on the class, but if there are pre-reading requirements, OTN will provide those details in the registration confirmation or shortly therafter in a follow up email. Pre-requisites will be clearly listed in the course descriptions.
Q. Can the OTN provide in-house training for my employees?
A. Yes, all of our trainers/instructors are available for customized, organization-specific training. OTN will work with you to meet your customized educational needs, in terms of both format and content.
